An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Book Summary:

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

My Review:  Think about living in this big empire, don’t follow their rules you end up dead. There you meet Laia who witness the death of her grandparents and her brother taken away for reason she don’t understand. There she runs for her life and finds the rebels hide out begging for help on freeing her brother. With the rebels help she becomes a slave in Elias’s household to find out details of the academy where they train deadly assassins. There you meet Elias, who is struggling to become this killer within and molding with his mask. His heart just not in it. To his peers he is top of his class, killed so people but in the end his heart just not in it anymore. If you defy the empire or run away you end up dead. When Laia first bump into Elias she was frighten of who he was. She only know that mask are killers but once seeing Elias without his mask she start to feel sorry for him. In the end can these two change their fate and escape the being pawns with the empire or they doom to die? Can’t give it all the way, just have to read the books yourself. So many questions at the end but don’t worry a squeal is coming soon. So enjoy my readers!
