What I’m Reading Monday

Summary:

I am a weed.

Unloved by my abusive, alcoholic dad. Unwanted by my classmates. Unnoticed by everyone else.

But I’d suffer anything to give my kid sister a better life—the minute I turn eighteen, I’m getting us the hell out of here. And some hot stranger telling me I am the key to stopping a war between Heaven and Hell isn’t going to change that.

Let the world crumble and burn, for all I care.

Draven is relentless, though. And very much a liar. Every time his sexy lips are moving, I can see it—in the dip of his head, the grit of his jaw—even if my heart begs me to ignore the signs.

So what does he want?

I need to figure it out fast, because now everyone is gunning for me. And damn if I don’t want to show them what happens when you let weeds thrive in the cracks of the pavement…

We can grow powerful enough to shatter the whole foundation.

Summary:

Riley Oh can’t wait to see her sister get initiated into the Gom clan, a powerful lineage of Korean healing witches their family has belonged to for generations. Her sister, Hattie, will earn her Gi bracelet and finally be able to cast spells without adult supervision. Although Riley is desperate to follow in her sister’s footsteps when she herself turns thirteen, she’s a saram–a person without magic. Riley was adopted, and despite having memorized every healing spell she’s ever heard, she often feels like the odd one out in her family and the gifted community.

Then Hattie gets an idea: what if the two of them could cast a spell that would allow Riley to share Hattie’s magic? Their sleuthing reveals a promising incantation in the family’s old spell book, and the sisters decide to perform it at Hattie’s initiation ceremony. If it works, no one will ever treat Riley as an outsider again. It’s a perfect plan!

Until it isn’t. When the sisters attempt to violate the laws of the Godrealm, Hattie’s life ends up hanging in the balance, and to save her Riley has to fulfill an impossible task: find the last fallen star. But what even is the star, and how can she find it?

As Riley embarks on her search, she finds herself meeting fantastic creatures and collaborating with her worst enemies. And when she uncovers secrets that challenge everything she has been taught to believe, Riley must decide what it means to be a witch, what it means to be family, and what it really means to belong

These Feather Flames by Alexander Overy

Summary:

A queer retelling of “The Firebird,” a Russian folktale

When twin heirs are born in Tourin, their fates are decided at a young age. While Izaveta remained at court to learn the skills she’d need as the future queen, Asya was taken away to train with her aunt, the mysterious Firebird, who ensured magic remained balanced in the realm.

But before Asya’s training is completed, the ancient power blooms inside her, which can mean only one thing: the queen is dead, and a new ruler must be crowned.

As the princesses come to understand everything their roles entail, they’ll discover who they can trust, who they can love—and who killed their mother.

My Review:

When two twins sisters have different destiny growing up.

Izaveta is stuck playing at the court and learning the ropes. She finds out playing the role of princess, requires some chess skills. She kinda bored of the whole court life and jealous of her sister get to be free. Then when the queen dies,it time for her to step up and save her kingdom and herself.

Asya been learning the ropes of becoming a firebird. A creature that must keep the balance of magic. Well she has yet accepted her fate and can not stomach hurting people like her aunt does. When the firebird comes to her early, she must return home. She seem happy to finally see her sister after so many years, but things change between them. Can the sisters put away their differences to save themselves and the kingdom.

These Feather Flames was such a amazing read. So very detailed the world building. I did love both sisters in the books and understood where they coming from. Love the point of views between those two. There been a lot of politics talk in the book, but I love how the magical and action balance everything out with it. As someone who get bored with politics reads in the kingdom fantasy, this book was prefect. Also look how pretty this cover is. I’m afraid they might change it along the way like they always do with covers. The ending will leave you for wanting more.

The book has:

Action

Siblings Rival

Forbidden love

Magic

Ready to start a epic new world, Check out These Feather Flames!
