What I’m Reading Monday

Summary:

After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus.

A flying demon feeding on human energies.

A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down.

And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.

The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.

She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

Summary:

In this fantasy thriller, four teens charged with murder and the illegal use of magic band together to devise the ultimate jailbreak. Perfect for fans of Six of Crows and How to Get Away with Murder.

Ever since his mother was killed, seventeen-year-old Cayder Broduck has had one goal–to see illegal users of magic brought to justice. People who carelessly use extradimensional magic for their own self-interest, without a care to the damage it does to society or those around them, deserve to be punished as far as Cayder is concerned. Because magic always has a price. So when Cayder lands a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to apprentice under a premier public defender, he takes it. If he can learn all the tricks of public defense, the better he’ll be able to dismantle defense arguments when he’s a prosecutor. Then he’ll finally be able to make sure justice is served.

But when he meets the three criminals he’s supposed to defend, it no longer seems so black and white. They’re teenagers, like him, and their stories are . . . complicated, like his. Vardean, the prison where Cayder’s new clients are incarcerated, also happens to be at the very heart of the horrible tear in the veil between their world and another dimension–where all magic comes from.

Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis

Summary:

The daughter of a horror film director is not afraid of anything–until she gets to Harrow Lake.

Things I know about Harrow Lake:
1.It’s where my father shot his most disturbing slasher film.
2.There’s something not right about this town.

Lola Nox is the daughter of a celebrated horror filmmaker–she thinks nothing can scare her.

But when her father is brutally attacked in their New York apartment, she’s quickly packed off to live with a grandmother she’s never met in Harrow Lake, the eerie town where her father’s most iconic horror movie was shot. The locals are weirdly obsessed with the film that put their town on the map–and there are strange disappearances, which the police seem determined to explain away.

And there’s someone–or some thing–stalking her every move.

The more Lola discovers about the town, the more terrifying it becomes. Because Lola’s got secrets of her own. And if she can’t find a way out of Harrow Lake, they might just be the death of her.

My Review:

Welcome to Harrow Lake, Where the best horror movie was ever made.

Lola is the daughter of a famous filmmaker. Her father kept her from the spotlight for years. When he is attack, Lola gets whisk away to her mother’s hometown. Soon she starts to get a feeling something haunting going on. While digging around into her mom’s life, she starts to uncover some shocking secrets. What really happen at Harrow Lake?

Harrow Lake was such a creepy book. The whole storyline is all horror so get ready to be scared. I found this old arc laying around with my tons of unread reads. This was another quick read. I love the setting deals with horror movies. Also another awesome cover, that fits the book prefect. I did like Lola in the book. She hardly don’t have many friends and kept isolated thanks to her father. At Harrow Lake she learns to make friends and to discover her mother’s life.

Ready to get your scare on at Harrow Lake.

Echoes and Empires by Morgan Rhodes

Summary:

Josslyn Drake knows only three things about magic: it’s rare, illegal, and always deadly. So when she’s caught up in a robbery gone wrong at the Queen’s Gala and infected by a dangerous piece of magic—one that allows her to step into the memories of an infamously evil warlock—she finds herself living her worst nightmare. Joss needs the magic removed before it corrupts her soul and kills her. But in Ironport, the cost of doing magic is death, and seeking help might mean scheduling her own execution. There’s nobody she can trust.

Nobody, that is, except wanted criminal Jericho Nox, who offers her a deal: his help extracting the magic in exchange for the magic itself. And though she’s not thrilled to be working with a thief, especially one as infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) as Jericho, Joss is desperate enough to accept.

But Jericho is nothing like Joss expects. The closer she grows with Jericho and the more she sees of the world outside her pampered life in the city, the more Joss begins to question the beliefs she’s always taken for granted—beliefs about right and wrong, about power and magic, and even about herself.

In an empire built on lies, the truth may be her greatest weapon

My Review:

A world where magic is forbidden…

Josslyn all her life was to believe that magic was evil. She blindly follows the rules of her world without knowing the truth. When she gets caught up in a robbery gone wrong, she about to learn a hard truth about her world.

Echoes and Empires was a magical adventure. Another fantasy world I did enjoyed. It was action packed, full of fun twists. Also it has another beautiful cover of the main character. Josslyn at first is acting like a spoiled brat. Then she kinda grows out of it along the way. Her views of world start changing after she start believing the truth. Nothing is ever what it seems in this society.

It was very action packed, full of magic fun. I love how Josslyn and Jericho act with each other. They always butting heads throughout the book. I’m so looking forward to book two to come out. This book was a magical read from beginning to end.

Among Thieves by M. J Kuhn

Summary:

A high-stakes heist novel set in a gritty world of magic and malice

In just over a year’s time, Ryia Cautella has already earned herself a reputation as the quickest, deadliest blade in the dockside city of Carrowwick—not to mention the sharpest tongue. But Ryia Cautella is not her real name.

For the past six years, a deadly secret has kept her in hiding, running from town to town, doing whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of the formidable Guildmaster—the sovereign ruler of the five kingdoms of Thamorr. No matter how far or fast she travels, his servants never fail to track her down…but even the most powerful men can be defeated.

Ryia’s path now leads directly into the heart of the Guildmaster’s stronghold, and against every instinct she has, it’s not a path she can walk alone. Forced to team up with a crew of assorted miscreants, smugglers, and thieves, Ryia must plan her next moves very carefully. If she succeeds, her freedom is won once and for all…but unfortunately for Ryia, her new allies are nearly as selfish as she is, and they all have plans of their own.

My Review:

What happens when you get a group of thieves together for a heist?

Ryia is my favorite in the book. She is a killer with a axe. You never want to get on her bad side. She wears this hoodie outfit so no one knows she really is. Ryia is the guidmaster favorite and number one. Also she holds a deadly secret. When she find a mysterious item up for sale, Ryia must work together with other thieves to get it.

I hardly don’t read a lot of adult fantasy. I was shock on much I did like this book. Mostly I have fallen in love with the cover of it. Look how cool the main character is. Also there lots of point of views from the other thieves in on the heist. It was pretty fun and exciting at times. I’m so looking forward to a book two after that crazy ending.

If you love death, thieves, and crazy heist, then your in for a treat. Check out Among Thieves.

Belle Anime Movie

Summary:

A high school student becomes a globally beloved singer after entering a fantastic virtual world. She soon embarks on an emotional and epic quest to uncover the identity of a mysterious beast who’s on the run from ruthless vigilantes.

My Reviews:

I rarely do movie reviews unless maybe if it’s a book to movies type of thing. I recently seen the anime Belle and I have fallen in love with it. It was so magical the storyline and the outfits. Just think of it as beauty and the beast retelling, set in a virtual world. I do hope soon we have books or a manga series from it. The music is so breath taking. Of course I had to download it to listen over and over again. For any anime readers or watches, check out Belle at local AMC. Hopefully it be steaming soon for more people to watch.

What I’m Reading Monday

To save a galactic kingdom from revolution, Kindred mind-pairings were created to ensure each and every person would be seen and heard, no matter how rich or poor…

Joy Abara knows her place. A commoner from the lowly planet Hali, she lives a simple life—apart from the notoriety that being Kindred to the nobility’s most infamous playboy brings.

Duke Felix Hamdi has a plan. He will exasperate his noble family to the point that they agree to let him choose his own future and finally meet his Kindred face-to-face.

Then the royal family is assassinated, putting Felix next in line for the throne…and accused of the murders. Someone will stop at nothing until he’s dead, which means they’ll target Joy, too. Meeting in person for the first time as they steal a spacecraft and flee amid chaos might not be ideal…and neither is crash-landing on the strange backward planet called Earth. But hiding might just be the perfect way to discover the true strength of the Kindred bond and expose a scandal—and a love—that may decide the future of a galaxy.

In the heart-pounding conclusion to the Wings of Ebony duology, which #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicole Yoon calls “bold, inventive, big-hearted and deeply perceptive,” Rue makes her final stand to reclaim her people’s stolen magic.

Rue has no memory of how she ended up locked in a basement prison without her magic or her allies. But she’s a girl from the East Row. And girls from the East Row don’t give up. Girls from the East Row pick themselves back up when they fall. Girls from the East Row break themselves out.

But reuniting with her friends is only half the battle. When she finds them again, Rue makes a vow: she will find a way to return the magic that the Chancellor has stolen from her father’s people. Yet even on Yiyo Peak, Rue is a misfit—with half a foot back in Houston and half a heart that is human as well as god, she’s not sure she’s the right person to lead the fight to reclaim a glorious past.

When a betrayal sends her into a tailspin, Rue must decide who to trust and how to be the leader that her people deserve…because if she doesn’t, it isn’t just Yiyo that will be destroyed—it will be Rue herself

It Will End Like This by Kyra Leigh

Summary:

Charlotte lost her mother six months ago, and still no one will tell her exactly what happened the day she mysteriously died. They say her heart stopped, but Charlotte knows deep down that there’s more to the story.

The only person who gets it is Charlotte’s sister, Maddi. Maddi agrees—people’s hearts don’t just stop. There are too many questions left unanswered for the girls to move on.

But their father is moving on. With their mother’s personal assistant. And both girls are sure that she’s determined to take everything that’s theirs away for herself.

Now the only way to get their lives back is for Charlotte and Maddi to decide how this story ends, themselves.

My Review:

It Will End Like This was such a good read for 2022. I thought it did a good job on how people handle grief differently. Also I was drawn to the cover of the sisters and one has blood on face. This was a quick read and finished it in a day.

Charlotte in the book I did like. She is emotionally upset over her mom’s death and not ready to move on. She rather hide from the world than face it. Charlotte pushes her boyfriend and friends away. A new friend might be able to help her. Then you have Maddie just doing what is told by her father, going to school and all. Both girls are holding in so much anger after their dad just quickly move from their mom. Soon both girls find shocking secrets from mom’s life, that drives them to the edge.

This was very tense read at times. Your just ready for any one of these girls to snapped soon. They hold so much in and trying to find answers why their mother died. Their dad so busy getting drunk, and hooking up with a new girl to even notice the girls.

Looking for something new for 2022 with crazy twists at the end, your in for a treat. Check out It Will End Like This.

The Midnight Girls by Alicia Jasinska

Summary:

It’s Karnawał season in the snow-cloaked Kingdom of Lechija, and from now until midnight when the church bells ring an end to Devil’s Tuesday time will be marked with wintry balls and glittery disguises, cavalcades of nightly torch-lit “kuligi” sleigh-parties.

Unbeknownst to the oblivious merrymakers, two monsters join the fun, descending upon the royal city of Warszów in the guise of two innocent girls. Newfound friends and polar opposites, Zosia and Marynka seem destined to have a friendship that’s stronger even than magic. But that’s put to the test when they realize they both have their sights set on Lechija’s pure-hearted prince. A pure heart contains immeasurable power and Marynka plans to bring the prince’s back to her grandmother in order to prove herself. While Zosia is determined to take his heart and its power for her own.

When neither will sacrifice their ambitions for the other, the festivities spiral into a wild contest with both girls vying to keep the hapless prince out of the other’s wicked grasp. But this isn’t some remote forest village, where a hint of stray magic might go unnoticed, Warszów is the icy capital of a kingdom that enjoys watching monsters burn, and if Zosia and Marynka’s innocent disguises continue to slip, their escalating rivalry might cost them not just the love they might have for each other, but both their lives.

My Review:

What happens when two monsters after the same thing?

Midnight and Midday was swore enemies. Also completing in getting the more hearts for their master. For years they never met each other face to face. Things are about to change when they go after the same heart. They are so busy out doing each to even get the heart. Along the way they find out they both somewhat a like in their own way. Will they be able to put aside their differences and work together?

This book was so much fun. I really love the characters in it. Even on the cover they look so cool. The storyline was crazy since there no good or bad person in. It is told in the point of view of two monsters. Which they just doing what they are told, maybe they are not so bad as people think. They pace of the story is kinda of slow, like the romance build up also. I still was digging the book and enjoying it. So hope there a book two soon.

Happy Reading!!!!
