What I’m Reading Monday

Mars has always been the lesser twin, the shadow to his sister Caroline’s radiance. But when Caroline dies under horrific circumstances, Mars is propelled to learn all he can about his once-inseparable sister who’d grown tragically distant.

Mars’s genderfluidity means he’s often excluded from the traditions — and expectations — of his politically-connected family. This includes attendance at the prestigious Aspen Conservancy Summer Academy where his sister poured so much of her time. But with his grief still fresh, he insists on attending in her place.

What Mars finds is a bucolic fairytale not meant for him. Folksy charm and sun-drenched festivities camouflage old-fashioned gender roles and a toxic preparatory rigor. Mars seeks out his sister’s old friends: a group of girls dubbed the Honeys, named for the beehives they maintain behind their cabin. They are beautiful and terrifying — and Mars is certain they’re connected to Caroline’s death.

But the longer he stays at Aspen, the more the sweet mountain breezes give way to hints of decay. Mars’s memories begin to falter, bleached beneath the relentless summer sun. Something is hunting him in broad daylight, toying with his mind. If Mars can’t find it soon, it will eat him alive.

Welcome to the funnest spot around . . .

Jay is living his best life at Karloff Country, one of the world’s most famous resorts. He’s got his family, his crew, and an incredible after-school job at the property’s main theme park. Life isn’t so great for the rest of the world, but when people come here to vacation, it’s to get away from all that.

As things outside get worse, trouble starts seeping into Karloff. First, Jay’s friend Connie and her family disappear in the middle of the night and no one will talk about it. Then the richest and most powerful families start arriving, only… they aren’t leaving. Unknown to the employees, the resort has been selling shares in an end-of-the-world oasis. The best of the best at the end of days. And in order to deliver the top-notch customer service the wealthy clientele paid for, the employees will be at their total beck and call.

Whether they like it or not.

Yet Karloff Country didn’t count on Jay and his crew–and just how far they’ll go to find out the truth and save themselves. But what’s more dangerous: the monster you know in your home or the unknown nightmare outside the walls?

Those Who Prey by Jennifer Moffett

Summary:
College life isn’t what Emily expected.
She expected to spend freshman year strolling through the ivy-covered campus with new friends, finally feeling like she belonged. Instead, she walks the campus alone, still not having found her place or her people so far away from home.
But then the Kingdom finds her.
The Kingdom, an exclusive on-campus group, offers everything Emily expected of college and more: acceptance, friends, a potential boyfriend, and a chance to spend the summer in Italy on a mission trip. But the trip is not what she thought it would be. Emily and the others are stripped of their passports and money. They’re cut off from their families back home. The Kingdom’s practices become increasingly manipulative and dangerous.
And someone ends up dead.

My Review:

What happens when you unknowingly join a cult?

Those who Prey was such an eye opening read. It shows you not to trust people you just met. Also that anyone can prey on people who are lonely. The storyline was so good and very tense. The characters you will like as well. The first couple pages draws you in good and you can’t seem to put this book down.

I did like Emily in the book. It’s her first time leaving home and doing college life. She tries to do the right thing with her roommate and it backfires. Emily becomes and outcast at school. Then a chance encounter with Josh change things.

She has a new friends to hang with, a new boy crush and get to go away to Italy for a bit. It all seems like a big dream come true, but once she enters Itlay things take a turn for the worse. Will Emily be able to escape the Kingdom?

This book was very suspenseful in the beginning to the end. So I read it in one sitting. Also look how pretty this cover to book. You can see how lonely Emily looks on it and I like the color pink. This book was something new to me. I never read anything about cults before, but this book blew my mind. It very eye opening as I said before. Just be cautious on new people you meet.

Spontaneous by Aaron Starmer

Summary:
A darkly funny and spectacularly original exploration of friendship, goodbyes—and spontaneous combustion.
Mara Carlyle’s senior year is going as normally as could be expected, until—wa-bam!—fellow senior Katelyn Ogden explodes during third period pre-calc.
Katelyn is the first, but she won’t be the last teenager to blow up without warning or explanation. As the seniors continue to pop like balloons and the national eye turns to Mara’s suburban New Jersey hometown, the FBI rolls in and the search for a reason is on.
Whip-smart and blunt, Mara narrates the end of their world as she knows it while trying to make it to graduation in one piece. It’s an explosive year punctuated by romance, quarantine, lifelong friendship, hallucinogenic mushrooms, bloggers, ice cream trucks, “Snooze Button™,” Bon Jovi, and the filthiest language you’ve ever heard from the President of the United States.

My Review:

It hard enough dealing with the stress of high school. Now you must deal with the stress of blowing up.

The main character, Katelyn is looking forward to her last year of school. Going to prom with the boy she loves. Having fun with her best friends. The only thing that stopping her having fun, when her classmates start blowing. Katelyn tries to hard to enjoy her last year or it may be her last..

Spontaneous was such a good book. Mostly gets you into the Halloween mood. Despite some kids blowing up and people afraid of the senior class, Katelyn makes the best of whatever time she has left with her boyfriend and best friend. Might have some trigger warning when kids start blowing up. No one in town can make sense of it. This book is all about having fun because it may be your last day on earth. I did like the cover to this read, it kinda cute and fun looking.

When I first heard about this book, I saw the movie trailer. It looks like a lot of fun the movie and it on demand for those who want to watch it.

Crush by Tracy Wolff

Summary:
Everything feels off—especially me. I’ve returned to Katmere Academy, but I’m haunted by fragments of days I have no recollection of living and struggling to understand who, or what, I really am.
Just when I start to feel safe again, Hudson is back with a vengeance. He insists there are secrets I don’t know about, threatening to drive a wedge between Jaxon and me forever. But far worse enemies are at our doorstep.
The Circle is caught in a power play and the Vampire Court is trying to drag me out of my world and into theirs. The only thing Hudson and Jaxon agree on is that leaving Katmere would mean my certain death.
And not only am I fighting for my life, but now everyone else’s is at stake—unless we can defeat an unspeakable evil. All I know is that saving the people I love is going to require sacrifice.

My Review:

This is book two of Crave if you have yet read book one, then you can disregard this review.

Crush pick up where we left off in the first book. Grace walking around the campus with no memory of what happen to her in the pass months. Each day Grace starts loosing track of the time and more memories. While everyone wonders what happens to Hudson, they find out he could be very close.

This book was such a fast pace read. I really love how much each have the characters have grown since the last book. There so many fun new characters you might love and enjoy. It still full of some fun twists and turns until the very end.

This time Grace is not a useless human, she finds out she a badass gargoyle. As we all have find out at the end of Crave. This time you will see her train and access her abilities and prove that she does belongs. Also while dealing, with two hot vampire brothers pinning for her attention.

So enjoy the fun in Crush.

{Arc Review} Accidentally by Alex Richards

Book Summary:
This timely, emotionally-resonant story about a teen girl dealing with the aftermath of a tragic shooting is a must-read from an exciting new YA talent.
Johanna has had more than enough trauma in her life. She lost her mom in a car accident, and her father went AWOL when Johanna was just a baby. At sixteen, life is steady, boring . . . maybe even stifling, since she’s being raised by her grandparents who never talk about their daughter, her mother Mandy.
Then he comes back: Robert Newsome, Johanna’s father, bringing memories and pictures of Mandy. But that’s not all he shares. A tragic car accident didn’t kill Mandy–it was Johanna, who at two years old, accidentally shot her own mother with an unsecured gun.
Now Johanna has to sort through it all–the return of her absentee father, her grandparents’ lies, her part in her mother’s death. But no one, neither her loyal best friends nor her sweet new boyfriend, can help her forgive them. Most of all, can she ever find a way to forgive herself?
In a searing, ultimately uplifting story, debut author Alex Richards tackles a different side of the important issue that has galvanized teens across our country.

My Review:

What happens that your life seems perfect, but someone from the past takes it away?

Johanna seems to a have a nice life with her grandparents after her mother death. She has awesome friends and slowly develops a crush on the new kid in school. Then her life takes a different direction when she finds a letter from her missing father. Once she tries to make amends with him, her life gets turn upside and family secrets get revealed.

Accidentally book is one of those emotional reads. The storyline is very heart breaking and well written. I felt so bad for the main character and what she going through in the book. This book may be sensitive to some readers. I really enjoyed everything about this read and the emotions this book brings to readers.

This review is a little short, sorry. A lot of Summary sums a lot on what’s happening. The main character Johanna has such awesome support from her friends and the new guy. It hard watching her push people away while she deals with everything alone. Hopefully Johanna find some peace in the end.

Book comes out July 7th, 2020.

{Arc Review} House of Dragons by Jessica Cluess

Summary:
Five royal houses will hear the call to compete in the Trial for the dragon throne. A liar, a soldier, a servant, a thief, and a murderer will answer it. Who will win?
When the Emperor dies, the five royal houses of Etrusia attend the Call, where one of their own will be selected to compete for the throne. It is always the oldest child, the one who has been preparing for years to compete in the Trial. But this year is different. This year, these five outcasts will answer the call….
THE LIAR: Emilia must hide her dark magic or be put to death.
THE SOLDIER: Lucian is a warrior who has sworn to never lift a sword again.
THE SERVANT: Vespir is a dragon trainer whose skills alone will keep her in the game.
THE THIEF: Ajax knows that nothing is free–he must take what he wants.
THE MURDERER: Hyperia was born to rule and will stop at nothing to take her throne.

My Review:

House of Dragons was action packed and full of fun. Well there may be some blood shed also. I was excited to get my hand on the arc at ala this year. Will end up buying it when I can. The world building is not as glamorous as you think it is. It’s full of bad people and killers. Of course they have dragons to make them more deadly. The main characters are ruthless and selfish at times but I did full in love with their dragons.

Emilia is the brains of the group. She knows everything between politics and the dragon trials. Her sister was supposed to go this year but she end up being picked. Now she must fight for her life or have her secery exposed.

Lucian is a big fighter and killer at the start of the book. He wants nothing to do with the dragon trials, but then he gets the call. He notice something different at first at the trials when he see Emilia his old best friend there. Lucian may seem uncaring, but I think Emilia brings out the best in him at times.

Vespir loves to train dragons and has a forbidden love with someone. Never she thought she would get call. She is no royal or even has a house name. Vespir knows nothing much of the ins and out being a royal, so why was she picked to rule?

Ajax is like the comedian in the group. He hardly takes anything series. Ajax is just thief and only cares about himself and his dragon, Dog. He feels sorry for Vespir because he knows they both are the weaknesses leak in the trials.

Hyperia is ruthless and would do anything to lead the kingdom, even kill her own sister to complete. She seems to have a soft side a little bit around Ajak, but I would not trust her. Only ruling the kingdom matters to her, even if she might have to kill again.

There so characters you either love or hate them in the end. The world building and everything was fantastic. Have not yet fallen in love with a character in the book yet.

Mostly I was falling in love with a dragon name, Dog. He has such a cute personality in the book. Dog acts like a dog at times. He is rut of the litter and just want to have fun and be love. While the other dragons are so series about their job. That enough on dragon the dog. I could go on forever.

This review is very long sorry. Lots of story and tons of characters to sort through. So many also twists and turns. Who will win in the end? I’m so looking forward for book two to come out.

Happy Reading!!!

So this is Love by Elizabeth Lim

Book Summary:
What if Cinderella never tried on the glass slipper? Unable to prove that she’s the missing princess, and unable to bear life under Lady Tremaine any longer, Cinderella attempts a fresh start, looking for work at the palace as a seamstress. But when the Grand Duke appoints her to serve under the king’s visiting sister, Cinderella becomes witness to a grand conspiracy to take the king-and the prince-out of power, as well as a longstanding prejudice against fairies, including Cinderella’s own Fairy Godmother. Faced with questions of love and loyalty to the kingdom, Cinderella must find a way to stop the villains of past and present . . . before it’s too late.

My Review:

Are you ready to dive into a new Cinderella story with a twist?

Cinderella is a classic fairytale from Disney. It had been retold over the years. There some dark versions of it and different types of happily ever afters also. This book gave Cinderella more character and in depth which I did enjoy.

This time around Cinderella has more personality in the book. She is still caring person when her stepmother and sisters hurt her so much. Instead of the prince finding her in the end with the glass slipper, she ends up being sold.

Cinderella is resourceful in this book and manage to escape and work at the castle. Trying hard to get the price to notice her. She still has self doubt with him accepting who she is bc of her status and abuse over years from stepmother and stepsisters. Along the way she learn of an evil plot to dethrone the prince. Also Cinderella finds out magic been outlaw so she will try her best to save her godmother and help the people around her out.

So much is going on at once with the book. Which I did enjoy reading. This retelling is fun and a little action pack. Also I do love the cover for this book. Did enjoy the prince had his own story in the book as well. I did like the prince in the book. He is kind and cares about his people. Also he has an open mind in changing old rules to better the kingdom.

Looking for an awesome new fairytale read then check out So This is Love.

Happy Reading!!!!
